9 easy Nativity costumes to make

9 easy Nativity costumes for kids

Posted on December 9, 2016January 10, 2026 by jenny

I seem to be giving a lot of money to my children’s school at this time of year. In the last month I’ve paid for school photos x 2, Christmas cards designed by them x 2, money for them to spend at their Christmas Fayre x 2, raffle tickets x 2, tickets to go and watch their Christmas nativity x 2, as well providing clothes for them to wear at the blooming nativity x 2! I’m so fed up of giving money to school!

I’ve bought a few costumes for them over the last few years but as they grow, they only get one use from them. Although my daughter wanted to a King unfortunately for her, she is a boring Angel (again). We didn’t have anything suitable from previous years but I’ve managed to put together an outfit for under £5.

My mum found her a pretty white bridesmaid dress in a charity shop for £2 which just needed a wash. We made her a cape (mainly to keep her warm) from a spare pillowcase and found a tinsel hairband in another charity shop. She’s not happy about being in the Nativity at all so I’m glad I didn’t spend a fortune on her costume.

My son is a sheep in his performance! I had a good look for sheep costumes I could make. By the time I had bought the fleecy fabric and spent time making it, it worked out cheaper to buy a costume. So I ordered a sheep tabard for him to wear. He is also unimpressed with being a sheep as he doesn’t have any words to say. I kind of wish they did away with the whole thing to be honest, especially when I have to pay for the pleasure of watching them do something they don’t want to do.

I had a great time browsing Pinterest for Nativity costumes to make so thought I would bring together 9 of my favourites, although it may be worth clicking through to my Pinterest board for lots more suggestions.

My step sons tend to do a Christmas concert performing music in their school uniforms but that makes it a lot easier for us!
