Eggs are a super food and this Spring we are trying some egg-themed science experiments. So far we’ve had fun with dissolving the shell of an egg using vinegar. My youngest thought this was a brilliant experiment so I wanted to do another egg-themed science experiment with her. There’s nothing like home learning, especially when you can leave it going for a few days in the kitchen. Facts about eggs We all love to eat fresh eggs but did you know any science facts about them? The outer shell is made of calcium carbonate crystals The white or albumen is…

We’ve used vinegar before with some of our science at home experiments. Today we’re going to share our egg in vinegar experiment and tell you what happens when you place a fresh egg in a cup of vinegar…

We celebrate Pi Day at the secondary school I work at so I thought it would be fun to celebrate Pi Day at home with my children this year. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th, it’s an annual celebration of the mathematical sign pi. Founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw, March 14th was selected because the numerical date (3.14) represents the first three digits of pi, it also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday. What is Pi? pi—which is written as the Greek letter for p, or π—is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to the diameter…

A few days ago we shared our plans to make a book nook to celebrate World Book Day. The children had lots of ideas for celebrating World Book Day and we did so much crafting last week! We made our own book marks, decorated World Book Day cupcakes inspired by Varjak Paw (our current book), shared a giveaway to win a copy of the latest Draw With Rob book and planned our own book nooks. What is a Book Nook? A Book Nook is basically a small diorama of an alleyway visible between the books on your shelves. Search on…

This World Book Day we just had to bring you a book giveaway. Our family love books, fact or fiction, it doesn’t matter. My children have read a lot over the last few months and have been excited for the release of the latest activity book by Rob Biddulph. I don’t know how we first discovered Rob Biddulph but my children love his style and eagerly await his weekly draw alongs. His third activity book is published today and I was delighted that I could pre-order copies for them as a special World Book Day gift! I have one extra…

I’m lucky that my children seem to enjoy sewing as much as I do. I’ve been introducing some simple sewing crafts so they can get used to using a needle and thread confidently. Sewing is a great activity for encouraging fine motor skills and hand/eye co-ordination. With Irish ancestry we are keen for our children to learn more about St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Our stitched shamrock craft for kids is a fun way to start the St Patrick’s Day celebrations. List of supplies: Coloured paper White or cream paper Green embroidery thread Needle Scissors Stitched Shamrock craft…

World Book Day will be different this year. As a parent I’m glad that I don’t need to provide my children with costumes to wear to school as both of them dislike dressing up. We will be celebrating World Book Day (Thursday 4th March) at home. We have already chosen books with our World Book Day vouchers and are looking forward to some of the online events we’ve seen. World Book Day 2021 This year World Book Day falls on Thursday 4th March. We love World Book Day because it encourages everyone to celebrate books! Reading has been a big…
