Bedtime routine: successful or stressful?

I’m sitting here at just gone 7 o’clock with my two children asleep in their beds (fingers crossed). Our bedtime routine has been established pretty much since the children were born and they never go to sleep without at least one story. My husband and I alternate taking each child to bed and our routine means they are usually in bed by 7pm.

Recent research undertaken by Fairy Non-Bio about children’s bedtime routines* found the following:

  • Even as dads get more involved in parenting, bedtime is still mums domain, with 51% of mums in charge of bedtime each night compared to just 15% of dads
  • 8 of 10 mums read to their children nightly – 4 out of 10 (37%) of children prefer new stories, with 2 out of 10 (22%) opting for the same stories that were read to their mums and dads.
  • A lucky 35% of mums say their child tends to settle down quickly and easily most nights, while another 43 % say this is the case 3-4 nights of the week.
  • 1 out of 10 admitted their bedtime routine is a cause of stress and tension in the evenings.

A book at bedtime

Fairy knows just how important reading is and to celebrate the importance of bedtime reading, they are currently running an on-pack promotion (with Fairy Non Bio or Fabric Softner) where parents can send in for three new Timmy Time books, developed exclusively for this partnership. My children love watching the adventures of Timmy on cBeebies and no doubt we’ll be looking out for these promotions on our next shop!

  1. Bedtime routine in our house is generally not too stressful thankfully, and we like to make sure our twins have at least one story. My son has decided he’s too old for a bedtime story now. The old classics we had ourselves as children are still popular. Tonight we had ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.

    1. Gah. My email address got entered on the form instead of my name. 🙁 Hoping that a spambot doesn’t crawl it and send me spam!

  2. 8 of 10 mums – which is great!!! I read every day as daughter loves books and always has 🙂 thanks

  3. 8 out of 10 mums is the answer.
Bedtime is thankfully not at all stressful for my wife and I, who have been lucky enough with our first child to have her sleep through since she was 2 weeks old. Even now as soon as she’s in the cot around 7-7.30pm she’s asleep until 6.30 the following morning and she’s 16 months.

  4. Lovely post, always interested in new books, my little one LOVES books! Thanks for the chance to win xx

8 out of 10 mums read to their children nightly xx

  5. 8/10 – And I have got to admit I am one of the minority who doesn’t…..Shame on me – think a new routine is called for starting from tonight!!

  6. 8 out of 10.
I guess I’m lucky then – when hubby’s not working he does bedtime much more often than me! Reading is definitely a must though 🙂

  7. 8 out of 10 mums and I am proud to say that I am one of them. My 2 love getting to choose a different book for me to read to them each night 🙂 x

  8. My children are both heavily into books…….and its made oh so much easier getting them interested in reading with great titles like these.

  9. 8 of 10 mums :O) I was one of the eight , found that it was the one thing that really helped to settle my fidgity daughter lol
