How to choose the right duvet for the season

Posted on March 17, 2026March 18, 2026 by jenny

The Importance of a Good Night’s Sleep as We Head Into Spring — and How to Choose the Right Duvet for the Season

As the days begin to lengthen and the first signs of spring emerge, many people feel a renewed sense of energy and optimism. Yet, seasonal transitions can also disrupt our sleep patterns more than we might expect. A good night’s sleep is essential at any time of year, but the shift from winter to spring brings unique challenges — from fluctuating temperatures to increased daylight — that can affect how rested we feel. One of the simplest and most effective ways to support healthy sleep during this period is to ensure your bedding, especially your duvet, is properly suited to the season. We would recommend any of the duvets from brands such as Simba.

Why Sleep Matters — Especially in a Changing Season

Sleep plays a vital role in supporting both physical and mental wellbeing. It impacts our mood, concentration, memory, immune function, and overall resilience. As spring approaches, several environmental and biological factors can interfere with our usual sleep rhythms.

First, increasing daylight affects our circadian rhythm — the body’s internal clock that determines when we feel awake or sleepy. When mornings become brighter earlier, some people may naturally wake sooner than they intend, reducing total sleep time. At the same time, lighter evenings can make it harder to fall asleep, especially for those sensitive to changes in natural light. Minor as this may seem, even small shifts in sleep timing can lead to feeling less refreshed.

Temperature also plays a major role. During early spring, evenings may still be chilly while daytime temperatures begin to rise, making it more difficult to maintain a stable, comfortable sleeping environment. The body relies heavily on temperature cues to fall asleep; if you’re too warm or too cold, it can interrupt both your ability to drift off and the quality of rest you get throughout the night.

Finally, spring can bring additional disruptions such as allergies, changes in routine, and increased social or work-related activity. All of these factors can make it harder to consistently get the restorative sleep our bodies need.

The Benefits of Sleeping Well

Making sleep a priority during this seasonal transition offers wide-ranging benefits. Quality sleep helps strengthen the immune system — particularly useful during the lingering cold and flu period at the start of spring. It supports emotional balance, helping you manage stress more effectively. And with longer, more active days ahead, good sleep ensures you have the energy to enjoy them.

Cognitively, sleep enhances focus, decision-making, and memory — all essential for day-to-day tasks. As spring often brings fresh starts and renewed motivation, being well-rested gives you a stronger foundation to make positive changes or simply navigate your daily responsibilities with more clarity and ease.

Choosing the Right Duvet for Spring

One practical but often overlooked factor that greatly influences sleep quality is having the right duvet for the season. Because our bodies rely on temperature regulation to sleep well, using a duvet that’s too heavy or too warm can cause overheating, restlessness, and frequent waking. Conversely, one that’s too light may leave you cold, making it difficult to settle or stay asleep.

Here’s what to consider as we move into spring:

  1. Check the Tog Rating

The tog rating measures how effectively a duvet retains heat. Winter duvets typically fall between 12–15 tog, while spring and autumn duvets usually sit in the 7–10.5 tog range. You can also buy a hybrid duvet with a 10.5 tog which is perfect for year-round use.

For early spring — when temperatures can vary — an all‑season duvet or something around 7–9 tog is often ideal. It’s warm enough for cooler nights but not overly insulating as the weather warms.

  1. Think About the Filling

Different fillings can affect both warmth and breathability:

  • Natural fillings (like duck or goose down) are lightweight and breathable, helping regulate temperature more effectively.
  • Synthetic fillings are great for allergy sufferers and can be more affordable, though they may feel slightly heavier.

If you tend to overheat at night, opt for breathable natural fibres or specially designed temperature‑regulating materials such as bamboo or moisture‑wicking microfibres.

  1. Consider Versatility

Spring is unpredictable. If you want flexibility, consider a 3‑in‑1 or all‑season duvet that allows you to combine layers or separate them as needed. This ensures comfort whether you’re experiencing a warm spell or a sudden cold snap.

  1. Maintain Bedding Freshness

Spring is a perfect time to refresh bedding. Washing duvet covers regularly, airing out the duvet, and replacing older bedding can all improve sleep quality and create a more inviting sleep environment.

A Smooth Transition Into the Season

As we welcome the brighter days and renewed energy of spring, supporting your sleep is one of the best things you can do for your wellbeing. By understanding how the changing season affects your rest — and by choosing a duvet that keeps you comfortable through fluctuating temperatures — you set yourself up for more restful nights and more energised days.
