Gingerbread house painted rocks tutorial

Gingerbread house painted rocks

Posted on November 17, 2018February 17, 2019 by jenny

We love making and hiding painted rocks around the town where we live. It’s something we’ve done for a while and really enjoy. We didn’t find any painted rocks on our most recent rock hunting trip so we knew it was time to decorate some for others to find. With Christmas coming up we thought we would try decorating some seasonal gingerbread house painted rocks.

Equipment to decorate your own painted rocks

Bag of smooth pebbles or rocks (we like these – Amazon affiliate link)

8 pack of Uni Posca paint pens with Ultra fine 1mm nib (we like these – Amazon affiliate link)

Black acrylic paint (we like this – Amazon affiliate link)

Spray varnish to seal the painted rocks (we use this – Amazon affiliate link)

How to make a Gingerbread house painted rock

When making our own painted rocks we always prep our rocks first. The children love some water play so I pour some warm water into a bowl, add some washing up liquid and let them scrub the rocks. This removes any dirty residue and is fun too!

We leave the clean rocks on a tea towel to dry for a while.

Then it’s time to start decorating! We all had a go at making gingerbread house painted rocks and used a mixture of white, natural and rocks we had previously painted black. We use fine nibbed Posca pens as these are great for adding detail.

The children each took some of the rocks and drew their houses. The Posca pens are super quick to dry but we made sure we left the rocks to dry for a few minutes before adding another colour.

Both the children had completely different ideas. They love decorating rocks and had fun creating their own gingerbread house.

Mine was quite simple but the kids added Christmas trees and candy canes to theirs!

We’re going to varnish these and add our local hashtag, then they will be ready to hide! These would make a great kid-made gift this festive season too.

Today I’m taking part in the Kid-Made Christmas Gift series organised by Teach Me Mommy. Don’t forget to check out the whole Kid-made Christmas series, including the gorgeous popsicle stick ornament from Projects with Kids.

On our walks, my kids are always on the lookout for rocks they can paint. Gingerbread painted rocks is such an amazing idea for this time of the year!
