It feels like it’s been a while since I shared a really good childrens’ book with you. Both my children are bookworms. We still visit our local library every few weeks but it’s also really lovely to be sent a book to review. Recently the V&A has collaborated with Puffin on some fun picture books. The partnership brings the museum alive through innovative activity books and we are so excited to be telling you about How to fly like an elephant by Kyoko Nemoto.
How to fly like an elephant by Kyoko Nemoto
EVERYONE knows that elephants can’t fly.
They’re TOO heavy and they have NO wings!
BUT we also know that they are good at thinking,
AND planning, AND trying again… Maybe if they
work together, and never give up, elephants CAN fly!
But they can only do it with help from YOU!
Get this parade of pachyderms off the ground by opening window flaps, revealing hidden clues, and folding pages into aeroplane wings! This timeless story about persistence, creativity, and teamwork, has playful instructions encouraging readers to ‘think outside the book’.
This is a gorgeous picture book and a lovely story too. My 6 year old loves elephants and thought the idea of them being able to fly was pretty funny. The interactive element really helps to engage her too, although I think she felt quite naughty folding over the page of the book!
Kyoko Nemoto sketches her initial ideas, and then creates textures using ink and a paint roller. After she is happy with both, she scans sketch and texture into a computer and assembles them. Though the artwork is ‘digital’ all the materials are handmade. Kyoko lives in Tokyo, and attended Setsu Mode Seminar. She illustrates a wide range of books and products. This is her debut picture book which she has both written and illustrated.
