We love a heritage railway and on our recent trip to North Norfolk managed to ride on the North Norfolk Railway, which goes from the pretty seaside town of Sheringham to Holt.
Sheringham to Holt {North Norfolk Railway}
The North Norfolk Railway offers a 10.5 mile round trip by steam train (there are vintage diesel trains on some journeys) through an area of North Norfolk designated as being of outstanding natural beauty. We didn’t have great weather during our holiday but it didn’t stop us wanting to go on the steam train. We arrived at Sheringham and took the first train to Holt which was the very lovely steam engine Ring Haw.
The children loved watching all the action in the engine but before we knew it we were off. It’s a really lovely run with plenty to see. There are historic stations, a museum of the railway’s history, a museum signal box and a children’s activity carriage.
It didn’t stop us from having a few games of OK Play which we took with us and played everywhere.
We stopped at the pretty station of Holt but decided against walking to the town. Instead we explored the station, popping in to see ‘Broad Sidlinch’ a 300 square foot model railway, and visit the museum. In fact the children enjoyed the trail at the museum so much that we had to race back to catch our train.
When we returned to Sheringham we stopped for a drink in the lovely booking hall cafe. There was a gift shop too of course. Our family ticket cost us £44.00 which included a £5 voucher to spend in the cafe or gift shop.
The train station is in the heart of the pretty town so we walked down the high street to the beach. There is an amazing stoney beach and the children loved climbing over the rocks and throwing stones into the waves.
