Advent Candle Suncatcher

Advent Candle Suncatcher tutorial

As well as all the chocolate and books, Advent is about something much simpler, which often gets overlooked. The word Advent loosely means “coming” and is the time of waiting and preparing for the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent was actually Sunday 3rd December and we marked it with a lovely Advent Candle Suncatcher craft.

We love making suncatchers throughout the year. I couldn’t find that we had ever made one for Advent so today we’re going to share the Advent candle suncatcher we made. Suncatchers are so simple to make, and lovely to look at.

Equipment to make an Advent Candle Suncatcher

Paper plate

Scissors

Permanent marker

Coloured cellophane pieces

Contact paper (sticky back plastic)

How to make an Advent Candle Suncatcher

Draw a candle on the centre of your paper plate. Make sure it is attached to the outer edge of your paper plate as this will act as the frame.

Cut out the background of your candle, making sure not to cut through the outer edge.

We decided to cover our candle in coloured cellophane strips, but you can leave this blank, or colour in, if you prefer.

Cover one side with a circle of contact paper, then get to work covering it with pieces of coloured cellophane.

Punch a hole in the top of the paper plate and hang up with bakers twine or washi tape. You could make 4 of these – one for each Sunday in Advent!

I love this simple but totally doable craft with young children and the result is so beautiful. I need to pick up some cellophane so I can do this with my two boys

I love how this is both creative and easy to make. We could make many special ones with kids.
