Vintage ottoman makeover

Vintage ottoman makeover with Pinty Plus

Posted on September 21, 2017May 5, 2020 by jenny

Recently I was given a lovely vintage ottoman. An ottoman is a piece of furniture consisting of a padded seat or bench, usually without a back or arms, which typically serves as a box. Ours has a hinged lid and is perfect for storing bedding and towels.

Our linen cupboard is overflowing so I thought this would be a great addition. It’s also quite slim so fits perfectly on our landing. The only problem was that it was dark brown with a stained fabric top. It was pretty horrible and definitely in need of some TLC. Here’s the before photograph of my vintage ottoman makeover:

I removed the trim and stained fabric from the top of the ottoman, then gave it a light sanding.

Although it looks like Lloyd Loom we found it had a Kraft label on the back.

To transform it I used Pinty Plus Tech – Primer for Plastics and 2 x Pinty Plus Chalk Paint in Piedra Stone (CK791). Because it had been painted dark brown, and I wasn’t too sure what it was made of, I used the Pinty Plus Tech Primer for Plastics to cover over the colour.

This was touch dry in about 20 minutes and I gave it another coat, inside as well as outside. Then I gave it two coats of the Pinty Plus Chalk Paint in Piedra Stone.

I’m thinking of covering the top in some Orla Kiely fabric from Dunelm Mill but I haven’t had a chance to pick any yet. So for now I’ve placed it back on the landing and filled it! Who knew I was that desperate for extra storage but I’ve used it to store the kids’ blankets. I’ll post an update when I’ve covered the top.

I love the fact that these can be used for dual purposes – as storage as well as for sitting on it. I’ve always been concerned of how much human weight can these work well with.
