This week Ella asked why we live where we do and I thought it would be fun to write a bit about our home.
We currently live in an Edwardian terrace in north London. The first flat we bought was a lovely 2 bedroom in Dartmouth Park but it was a terrible house conversion and too noisy. We lived there for 2 years before we knew we wanted our own front door and outside space. We wanted to stay on the tube network as before Edward we used to enjoy going out after work. Estate agents wouldn’t take us seriously until our flat was under offer so we basically had a week to find somewhere new to live! We’d already narrowed down our search to an area we could afford a proper house.
I remember walking through our front door on the first viewing. It was a lovely period house with stripped floorboards, original fireplaces and sash windows. It was furnished exactly how we would furnish it ourselves and there was an Orla Kiely handbag at the bottom of the stairs – I knew this was a sign! It had a loft conversion and this is what really sold it to us: a beautiful open space on the top floor with en-suite bathroom. Neither neighbour had converted their lofts so we knew we could sleep in peace, undisturbed by noisy neighbours.
We went back for another viewing later that week and fortunately our offer was accepted and we moved in 3 months later.
We only imagined we would stay 2 years as we bought when the property market was booming but of course it crashed and we’re still here 4 years later. We love our house. Since we’ve been here we’ve planted a beautiful garden but not needed to do much to the house. However, our growing family needs more space and we’ve decided to look for a bigger place, hopefully detached with a garage and room for a man cave for hubby.

May 17, 2011 at 1:10 pmNo, they were still living here when we looked round. We seemed to share similar tastes in so many things that we could kind of see ourselves living here very easily!

That’s so weird about the handbag, definitely a sign! It’s nice that you’ve been so happy there, even though you’ve had to stay slightly longer than you planned.

May 18, 2011 at 4:36 pmIt sounds like you have a lovely, happy home. It will be difficult to find somewhere you love as much. I don’t think I could move now. Also I’d like to subscribe to your blog but can’t find the RSS feeder? Thanks Milly
