Kids crafts Recycled crafts tutorial

Chalkboard wooden house blocks

Today I’m joining in with the monthly Kid Craft Challenge organised by The Resourceful Mama. The theme this month is a craft from a recycled item and as we have (many) offcuts of wood in the shed, I thought it would be fun to make something from these.

First I asked my husband to cut the offcuts into smaller pieces. I roughly measured the blocks about 10cm x 5cm, and he cut them using his electric mitre saw. My 5 year old helped sand each block using a sanding block. My husband taught him the correct way to use it and he  sanded the blocks over a couple of days, I think he found it quite therapeutic!

Then he painted them with blackboard paint which was quite messy and I’m really glad he wore disposable gloves! We left them to dry for 24 hours.

Then they were ready to play. I gave my children some chalk so they could draw their own houses on the blocks. The great thing about these is that you can rub out your drawing and make another one as often as you like.

As the weather is improving the children have been happy to take them outside to play too. They make a great addition to our fairy village and I know will be played with throughout the warmer months but can be brought inside too.

These are just adorable! Imagine the possibilities for small world play! Why have I never thought about wearing disposable gloves whilst painting – I am forever walking around with black fingers due to paint! Have pinned.

Great idea and so easy to make. Your son looks happy to be doing that sanding. They are great for so many things.

What a great idea! My kids would have so much fun playing with these! The disposable gloves is brilliant! My kids can never understand that it might take a couple washings before the paint comes off completely. Thanks for participating in the Kid Craft Challenge.
