What I’m reading: The Girl On The Train

It feels like it’s been a while since I shared a good book I’ve enjoyed reading. Just before Christmas I was looking for something new to read. It was a difficult time as I knew I would be receiving a few books for Christmas but I really wanted something to read. I was in my local Waterstones buying a few last minute Christmas presents and decided to purchase a copy of The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins.

the girl on the train...

I’m probably the last person in the world to read it. I don’t have a commute, or much time to read, but I read an interview with Emily Blunt who plays Rachel in the film version. I knew that if a film was already being made then it must be a good read.

I never read thrillers. In fact the sticker on the cover shouting ‘The Thriller of the Year’ almost put me off buying it. However a shop assistant saw me holding a copy and told me it was her favourite book of the year and I duly purchased a copy.

I treated myself to the gift edition of The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkin, featuring a black cover with a train track pattern and sprayed red edges.

Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. She knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a row of back gardens. She’s even started to feel like she knows the people who live in one of the houses. ‘Jess and Jason’, she calls them. Their life – as she sees it – is perfect. If only Rachel could be that happy. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Now Rachel has a chance to become a part of the lives she’s only watched from afar. Now they’ll see; she’s much more than just the girl on the train…

The story is told from the viewpoint of 3 women and goes back and forth over a period of a few months. I liked the way the story was written and found it easy to follow. Although none of the characters are particularly likeable I found them believable. Once I started reading I could hardly put this book down. I looked forward to going to bed early so I could read a couple of chapters and took it with me today when I went shopping so I could read it on the tube! I never read thrillers but I loved the way each story was entwined. I admit I guessed whodunnit about half way through but I still enjoyed the suspense of the plot. This is a brilliant book with some great flawed characters and lots of twists and turns.
