It’s been a while since I shared any gingerbread related crafts with you so I’m happy to be sharing our Book Inspired Crafts and Activities for Kids with you today. One of our favourite books is The Gingerbread Man and we enjoyed making peg dolls inspired by the story.
The Gingerbread Man inspired peg dolls
You will need:
4 x wooden pegs
paint
felt
scissors
sticky dots
permanent pen
The first step is to take four wooden pegs and paint them. We decided to make four characters, The Gingerbread Man, a Fox, the Baker and her husband, so we painted two of them with brown paint and two with yellow.
After they had dried we decided how we were going to dress them. We raided my overflowing felt stash as felt is easy to cut and doesn’t fray, perfect for making teeny tiny clothes.
We started with the Gingerbread Man, cutting a rough shape for him and sticking it to the clothes peg with sticky dots. We added a pipe cleaner for arms and added a face with a permanent pen.
We did this with each character, looking for our favourite felt colour and choosing what they should wear. The Baker got a dress and apron, her husband got a shirt and trousers. Our favourite is the naughty fox!
Once we had finished our peg dolls we were able to recreate the story.
It’s a classic fairy tale about a Gingerbread Man’s escape from various pursuers and his eventual demise between the jaws of a fox. There are variations in the characters but our favourite features the baker and his wife, the gingerbread man and a fox. There are other characters, such as the chicken, a dog, a cow, a horse, but we decided to make the other characters.
The story is great for it’s rhythm and repetition with the lines
- Run, run as fast as you can!
- You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man!
