Felt busy bag gingerbread house

I’m sure you’ve noticed my obsession with gingerbread house but it really comes to life at this time of year. In the last week we’ve made a gingerbread tree, gingerbread biscuits, the gingerbread man story stones and today I wanted to share our felt busy bag gingerbread house.

The gingerbread house appears in the well-known fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel. Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister threatened by a witch living in the deep dark forest in a house constructed of gingerbread and sweets. The two children survive by outwitting her. Aspects of the story are a little dark but we are happy to take the fun aspects of the story and build lovely gingerbread houses.

I thought it would be fun to make a little busy bag activity for my 2 year old. Busy bags are self-contained educational toys and perfect for story telling at home or on the move. Our felt busy bag gingerbread house consists of a gingerbread house, doors and windows and felt sweets which can be placed on the gingerbread house. I added a handy felt pocket on the back on the house to store all the parts when it’s not being played with.

I adapted a felt Wild Olive pattern to make an adorable gingerbread house play scene. There’s a door, chimney, window, roof and tree to finish off the house, and a selection of candy canes, gum drops, peppermint, lolly pop and pink biscuits to decorate.

We love our felt gingerbread house although it was slightly hijacked by my 4 year old and his pesky Cars toys (as usual!).
