The story of The Gingerbread Man is a perfect book for reading at this time of year. It’s a classic fairy tale about a Gingerbread Man’s escape from various pursuers and his eventual demise between the jaws of a fox.
The Gingerbread Man
There are variations in the characters but our favourite features an old couple, a chicken, a dog, a cow, a horse and a fox.
The story is great for it’s rhythm and repetition with the lines
- Run, run as fast as you can!
- You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man!
We love crafting around books, they really help my children engage with the story and it seems to help them remember the characters and story. I thought I would make The Gingerbread Man story stones to help my children tell the story for themselves.
Equipment needed to make The Gingerbread Man story stones:
smooth pebbles or stones
images of the main characters in The Gingerbread Man
PVA glue and brush
How to make The Gingerbread Man story stones:
Most importantly you need images of the main characters in The Gingerbread Man story. We found images on Twinkl, but you could cut them out of an old copy of the story or draw your own.
Trim the images to fit your pebbles and glue them in place with a generous layer of PVA glue.
Set aside and leave to dry.
When they are dry use them to tell the story of the Gingerbread Man. My children love to tell me their own version of the story using them but we also hide them so they can look for them. We’ve even used our craft supplies to make a backdrop for our story telling, a matchbox for an oven and craft sticks for the river help the story really come to life.

What a clever ideas! They look so pretty too! Thank you for sharing it with us #pintorials
What a lovely idea. It’s great to get children involved in a story and help use their imaginations for their own version too.

These are great perfect for helping kids with retelling and developing their own story language.
