Back to school: buying uniform

Posted on September 6, 2014September 7, 2014 by jenny

My 4 year old starts Reception next week. They are easing him in gently and he won’t be doing full days until the 22nd. Despite attending Nursery and wearing the school uniform I still needed to buy him a whole load of new items. Thankfully Matalan offered to kit him out for Reception. They gave me the opportunity to do my shopping in store or online and, as his return to school was fast approaching, I opted for online.

The Matalan website is pretty easy to use. You can search via the School Shop tab on the homepage and I was able to order his polo shirts, trousers, all of his PE uniform and bag as well as a couple of other pieces too.

The only problem I had was when I tried to checkout my basket. Some of the items were out of stock but it only told me the ID number and not the name. It was a little frustrating and I wish there was some way of being able to see out of stock items as you browse, rather than when you get to the checkout stage.

Eventually I was able to checkout and the items arrived quickly. Although I used the sizing information on the website unfortunately the trousers and the plimsolls didn’t fit properly but I think I will be able to chop a couple of inches off the bottom of each leg. All the items were great value and seem good quality too. Hopefully they will stand up to the test of being worn and washed frequently. Look out for pics of the First Day shortly!

Glad you’ve got your uniform sorted. My little girl started school last week. It was hard work, and I started in July! It seemed that everywhere was sold out of something everytime you tried to shop. It was particularly hard getting things for 3-4 year olds, and when they did arrive some were too big round the waist. Luckily I used my sewing skills to alter them. I can’t believe we’ve got to go through this every year from now on!

Ah that’s great of Matalan, there isn’t one that close to me so I haven’t been in a long time, and didn’t realise that you could shop online, going to check them out now!

I can imagine school uniform is a nightmare. Luckly you can pick it up far more cheaply now and don’t have to buy it from a specialist school shop like I did.
