Petit Collage is a collection of 25 vintage modern handcrafted designs for children and families, from award-winning designer Lorena Siminovich.
The fun, imaginative projects range from a paper toy dollhouse and personalised baby blocks to an adorable bunny clock and Petit Collage’s signature name plaque, growth chart and paper mobiles. Many can be made with the help of your children and there are ideas throughout to make them ‘kid fun’. The book also contains gorgeous photography, step by step instructions and additional tips for each project.
Petit Collage will help parents create handmade items for kids that adults will also adore. Many of the projects involve simple decoupage and paper techniques. As a sentimental mum the All About Me memory box really appealed to me.
I love keepsake boxes and thought I would scale down the project to make a small memory box for my daughters’ Christening bracelet, teething necklace, dummy and a lock of hair from her first hair cut.
The templates are included in the back of the book so I used them to cut out the shapes and her initials from a selection of craft papers. I chose pink because she’s 2 and everything is pink at the moment. I also found my favourite photo of her which I re-sized as the centerpiece for the sun ring. I used decopatch glue to hold everything in place.
I love the sun and rays motif and the colours of my box match Little Sis’ personality perfectly but you could easily use any colours of patterned paper for this project. Little Sis has already filled her little box with her own treasures so it looks like I’ll be making another one to put away.
This project also included some suggestions for kids to create their own masterpieces based on collage art. I thought Big Brother would enjoy some messy glue fun so I set him up with his own box and stack of space-themed papers so he could create a little keepsake box too.
Petit Collage is a beautiful book. The projects are a little more unusual so perfect for inspiring you to create some really lovely objects for your children and home.
Lorena Siminovich is a San Francisco-based designer, artist and author, originally from Buenos Aires. She has written or illustrated over 20 children’s books. A creative force, she is the founder of Petit Collage, a line of modern wall décor and accessories with a vintage twist.
