I’m currently working with BritMums and British Lion Eggs on the Shortcut Eggsperts programme. Our latest challenge is all about creating egg dishes for summer outdoor dining. The weather has been amazing lately and we’ve been enjoying lots of picnics in the sunshine. My children love it when I surprise them with a fun bento lunch and I thought I would show how to make molded eggs for a bento picnic.
How to make molded eggs for a bento picnic
You will need egg molds (I bought animal ones from Amazon) and eggs
First you need to hard boil your eggs. Place the eggs in a saucepan of cold water and bring to the boil, then boil for 8 minutes. Then you need to remove the shell as quickly as you can, I do this under the cold tap so I don’t burn my fingers!
When you’ve removed all the shell place your egg into your egg mold and slowly close the lid and snap it shut. A little bit of the egg might squeeze out from the mold but don’t worry – this can be trimmed later.
Leave the egg molds in a bowl of cold water for at least 10 minutes before removing from their molds. You should have beautifully shaped eggs.
How to make a bento picnic
My children love a bento picnic. We’ve been using a brilliant bento lunchbox from Munchkin which has three divided compartments. I use silicone cupcake cases if I need more compartments. Fridays tend to be a bento lunch as we don’t have any activities other than nursery in the afternoon. It means I can spend a little longer preparing lunch 🙂
I placed the molded hard boiled egg in a cupcake case along with ham finger sandwiches, a Babybel and a couple of crackers. I also added tomatoes, cucumber cut into flowers and some chopped yellow pepper. I used some of my favourite picks to decorate the Babybel and vegetables.
My children loved their bento picnic, especially the molded eggs which are really fun. They don’t take too long to make and are a great alternative to the normal picnic staples of egg sandwiches or quiche.

I bet children love the eggs and anything that makes them eat good food is fine by me!
Oh wow I love these! I think I may just have to get some as the girls have gone off eggs a bit recently (partly due to the endless supply from our chickens) and this might just persuade them to eat them again!
My LO loves his eggs, even though he’s only 1 I think he’d absolutely love these!
These are fab! And your bento box looks great, my kids would be jealous for sure!
Oh this is so brilliant, I’ve seen these for sale but never knew how to use them. I’m off to get some on ebay now!
