Today Big Brother and I were invited to meet the Moomins on a summer musical adventure at the Polka Theatre in south London. It’s not often we go out without Little Sis but as the show is recommended for age 4+ I thought it would be a nice opportunity to see this show together.
Tove Jansson’s most iconic characters the Moomins, who have charmed children for generations, take to the stage for Moominsummer Madness. With breathtaking puppetry, heart-warming humour and original songs performed live by actor-musician puppeteers, this musical adventure makes the perfect summer family treat.
We arrived at the theatre just in time for the performance so took our seats as the lights went down.
When a huge flood sweeps through Moominvalley, the Moomins find an exciting new home… a floating theatre!
But why is there a door in the floor? Why does the scenery start changing? And where do Moomintroll, Little My and Snork Maiden disappear to? As strange things start to happen it seems the only way to bring the family back together is to put on a play!
Big Brother loved watching the show. We’d never read this story before but it didn’t matter as we were both completely enthralled by the performance. The puppeteers were amazing and really brought the puppets to life and the songs were catchy too. I was really pleased that my son was able to sit through the performance which lasted about 90 minutes and included a short interval (just enough time for him to wolf down a tub of chocolate ice-cream!).
After the performance we had time to explore the Polka Theatre. There was a small shop downstairs as well as a cafe and outside playground. We had a lovely time and would recommend Moominsummer Madness s a great introduction to the work of Tove Jansson, the lovely Moomins and the Polka Theatre.
Moominsummer Madness is part of Tove100, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tove Jansson. Moominsummer Madness at the Polka Theatre is showing from the 11th June until the 16th August (times vary, please check www.polkatheatre.com for more information). Recommended for ages 4+.
