Cornwall is a long way from where we live in West London but we always have a great time when we go. A few years ago the whole extended family rented a lovely old house in the picturesque village of Looe. It was a great base to explore that part of Cornwall and pretty much the perfect family holiday.
We’ve always been National Trust members. They look after some of the most beautiful countryside, stately homes, buildings, art collections and more. I love knowing our membership fee helps contribute (in a tiny way) to saving and preserving some of these things so I, my children, and others can enjoy them. We’ve had some great days out visiting a variety of places, including one of my favourites – Lanhydrock House in Cornwall.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit twice. Once with my parents on a family holiday when I was younger and again more recently with my own little family. It is a perfect example of a Victorian country house and I really enjoy going there. You don’t have to be National Trust members to visit; pay the entrance fee and go back in time, immersing yourself in the house and the people who once lived and worked there.
The last time we visited my son was tiny. We have some great photos of us sitting outside in the beautiful grounds whilst he enjoyed yet another bottle of milk. I would love to go again now my children are older. They are used to visiting historic houses and love the children’s trails, exploring houses so different to ours and asking all kinds of strange questions only kids think about.

Next time we visit Cornwall I would love to stay in Polperro. It has higgledy piggledy streets, lovely old fishermen’s cottages and an unspoilt beach. It offers just the kind of outdoorsy holidays my children adore and would make a lovely change from our usual seaside holiday in Devon.
