Every month I challenge myself to make the Mollie Makes magazine cover gift. I’ve subscribed since it first came out and have a drawer full of unopened kits – but no more. I’ve been making more time for crafting and I love to try something new with each of the cover gifts.
Issue 62 of Mollie Makes came with a cool Mollie Makes Paper Gems Kit designed by Minieco. It contained a scary looking wooden template and 10 pretty papers.

Tonight I sat down and attempted to make a paper gem. I read through the instructions and decided to cut out my paper gem using my Swann Morton scalpel around the wooden template (rather than drawing around the template, scoring the lines and then cutting it out).

This worked well, I used a pencil to mark the 6 holes and scored along the lines using the cap of a pen.

Then came the tricky part, folding the paper gem to make mountain and valley folds. I had never heard of these terms before but the pictures in the instructions were really helpful.

I tried using a glue stick to stick each gem together but it wasn’t strong enough so I used glue dots instead.
I made three paper gems. They are pretty, not too time-consuming to make and I enjoyed making something different. I’m not sure if I’m going to use the rest of the papers to make any more as I don’t know what to do with the finished gems. Also, with two young children around I don’t think they will last very long before they get squashed!
Here are some of my previous makes:

They look really good. I love crafting (my blog was originally a kids craft blog) but I can’t do paper folding like this at all!
They look brilliant 🙂 I love being crafty but rarely have time for it anymore unfortunately x
Well done, they look brilliant! I love this sort of thing but I rarely get time. I still have lots of cover gifts from last year’s Simply Crochet to work through!x
I’ve never heard of Mollie Makes before and it’s brilliant. I love crafting but sometimes run out of ideas and this would be a fab subscription,
