My children have been looking forward to going trick or treating for a while. This year it looks like we will be away over Halloween so, to make up for them missing out, I thought I would help them make their own Halloween costumes so we can have a little party whilst we are away.
I’ve previously had fun experimenting with Dylon dyes so I thought I would make them costumes. Dylon sent us some plain white costumes along with a selection of Dylon dyes and a colourful Halloween palette for inspiration.
When I showed my children the Halloween palette they really liked it, mainly due to the Minion. I never thought about making a Minion costume but you could easily make your own with Sunflower Yellow and Ocean Blue dyes. I like all the colours in the palette, perfect for inspiring our own choices.
Little Sis decided she would love to turn the pretty white dress into a pumpkin with the Goldfish Orange dye. I’ve used hand dye before and it was simple to transform the dress in an hour.
I love the way the dye took to the different materials of the dress so the bodice is orange but the layers of the skirt remained white. We’re going to team the dress with pumpkin deely boppers and matching orange tights for our Halloween party.
My 5 year old could’t decide between an Incredible Hulk/Mad Scientist costume but he knew he liked the Tropical Green and Velvet Black dye. These were both machine dyes so I dyed the white trousers with the Tropical Green and the white jacket with the Velvet Black.
You don’t need to add salt to the dye so it was simple to use. I picked a sunny day so everything was drying outside in a couple of hours.
The children are both happy with their outfits which made me happy too. It felt good to make our own costumes and I would definitely do this again, in fact I can’t wait to decide what to customise next. Now I just need to get some face paint to finish off their outfits. Let the sugar rush commence 🙂

Great fun, I would love to do something like that. Although I only have a sachet of dark denim lurking in the under the sink cupboard!
