The past couple of days we’ve had a lot of rain so we’ve been trying lots of crafts to keep us busy. Today we thought we would show you how to dye some pasta shapes as we’ve been having lots of fun with dried pasta, it’s surprisingly quick and easy too.
To dye your own pasta you will need:
pasta shapes
white wine vinegar
food colouring
cocktail sticks
plastic bags
tray
How to dye pasta
Measure 1 teaspoon of white wine vinegar into a small bowl. Add a generous amount of food colouring and mix with a cocktail stick.
Place the dry pasta into a clear plastic bag and add the coloured vinegar mixture. Shake the bag for a couple of minutes until all the pasta is completely covered.
Pour out the coloured pasta onto a tray, I used disposable foil baking trays, and leave to dry thoroughly for an hour.
Then you are ready to craft and have some fun!
We only had a couple of different types of pasta but my children enjoyed wrapping the farfalle with string to make long necklaces. They threaded the penne with pipe cleaners to make bracelets. Threading is great for improving fine motor skills and I really enjoyed watching my 30 month old who quickly mastered both threading and bending the ends of the pipe cleaner to make her own bracelets.
I hope you like the results and let me know if you try it yourself!

Great idea, very creative. She looks deep in concentration x
I need to craft more with her, her older brother usually gets all my attention 🙁
I never thought of using vinegar. I thought just put the dye will do. Great tips!
Think you can use alcohol too but vinegar sounded more kid friendly!
Such a fun and creative idea for kids. I keep meaning to try some spaghetti pasta dyeing out with the boys for sensory play, but still haven’t got round to it yet! xxx
Great idea! I’ve done this with cooked spaghetti and dry rice but not tried pasta yet. Will have to give it a go!
Ooh, cooked spaghetti sounds fun!
I died some rice recently (but without vinegar), does the dye dry ok in the middle of the penne?
I left it for an hour and it was absolutely fine, rice is next on my list!
Ooooh what fun! I want to try this with my sisters! x
This.Is.Awesome! I love it, must try this for J!
I really like this idea of colouring pasta. Pinned!
This is lovely idea. Am pinning for use later.
They look amazing! Who knew you could make such vibrant colours 🙂 x
if you dont want to use food colouring , i use beetroot for the colouring , when left to dry it works a lovely colour x
What a great idea my reception class would love this
What a fabulous idea – didn’t realise you could dye it
I would love to try this with the girls especially with the weather not great at the moment x
That is amazing! So creative. If only you could eat it afterwards.
I love this idea! I adore pasta jewelry and picture frames. A pasta necklace and a wry smile is more certainly the mark of a contented mummy 🙂
They look great and so much fun 🙂
What fun! Makes crafts so much more exciting!
When I do it , it does not coat the pasta and just slides off…what type of food colour do you use?
