Did you know today was World Baking Day? World Baking Day is all about sharing the joy of baking cakes, and what better way to share the love than #caking!
I have been very busy baking but I wanted to share this vintage Nutbrown Party Time Cutter Gingerbread Man. I love the original packaging which proudly says “For use in making super Gingerbread Biscuits, highly popular with young people”. Eek, that makes me feel old!
The cutter was made in England by Thos. M. Nutbrown Ltd and the cover shows a freaky gingerbread man with scary eyes, buttons and belt made from coloured sweets. I’m surprised anyone would want to eat a biscuit looking like that!
The back of the card contains a recipe for gingerbread. I’m presuming it must be out of copyright so I’ve included it here:
- 4oz butter
- 4oz sugar
- 9oz flour (plain presumably)
- 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1-2 tsps ground ginger
- warmed syrup
I made some biscuits using this recipe but they weren’t very successful. As the quantity of syrup wasn’t listed I used golden syrup and just kept adding it in the mixing bowl as the dough refused to come together. As a result the biscuits were very crunchy and not that nice. I think I’ll stick to my tried and tested gingerbread recipe.
Linking up with flea market finds, magpie monday and thrift share monday

Haha “highly popular with young people” That’s brilliant!
Great find x
Clearly written before the internet was invented!
Those young people eh, always listening to their pop radio and munching gingerbread inside their hoodies…
Ah, am so glad you called him freaky as my first response was “ooh, he is a leetle creepy”.
I love it though- good work!
Hee hee, definitely creepy! Thanks for visiting 🙂
Yes that is a scary photo! A great additional to your gingerbread collection though 🙂
I love collecting cutters and it’s a nice feeling to try the vintage ones too 🙂
Jeez run run as fast as you can’t you can’t catch the ginger bread man .. arghhh
I never realised he was scary, I always thought gingerbreadmen were cute!
Deffo a creepy looking gingerbreadman hehe
Great find though x
You are right, he looks kind of scary on the packaging. The shape could also be for a clown in you wanted to change things up a bit.
Ooh that’s a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion!
Oh I love it! Real kitch, but in a good way!
Yay, I love kitch!!
erm , is it just me or does he look like he has a willy ???
You’re the first to suggest that. I didn’t see it before but I can’t stop seeing it now!!!
How cool! Love the shape of him 🙂 Shame the recipe wasn’t so yummy, I’m going to check yours out now! My little one loves the story of the gingerbread man.
My toddler loves it too, especially when we act it out with an edible gingerbread man!
What a wonderful find. Children just adore Gingerbread men. Thank you for the old recipe too!
My son (and husband) love it as much as I do – although I do bake other things too 🙂
