Bee’s Biscuits: brown paper packages tied up with string

It’s no secret I have a love of gingerbread. Biscuits or cake, I’m not fussy as long as it’s delicious. We were recently sent some gingerbread biscuits from Bee’s Bakery to try. They arrived beautifully packaged, carefully wrapped in paper, tied up with string. The first thing that struck me was the delicious smell followed by the unusual design of the biscuits. These are not just any biscuits – but an updated version of the jammie dodger – two delicious gingerbread biscuits sandwiched with a creamy filling. The top of each biscuit feature words or faces which you can customise…

    Wishlist – one new kettle!

We’ve just returned from a couple of days at my mum’s house. We got to do all our favourite activities. I went round the local charity shops (more Bob the Builder toys for the toddler), the husband flew his model aeroplane from the top of the local beauty spot and my mum kindly looked after the kids so me and my husband could spend the day at Yeo Valley, more of which later. My mum has one of those kettles which is always on, boiling water for cups of tea. She is constantly asking if we want a cup of…

    What would Mary Berry do?

For my birthday back in March I asked my husband to buy me Betty Crocker’s Gingerbread Cake & Cookie Mix. I’m not even sure where I saw it but I can’t resist gingerbread so had to have it. The best before date was today so I finally got round to baking it. I really wish I hadn’t bothered! It was horrible 🙁 The mix makes gingerbread cake or cookie mix (naturally flavoured!) and I chose gingerbread cake. I don’t know what went wrong as it smelled delicious, but it didn’t bake properly. I served it with custard to try and…

Brilliant biscuits for the Diamond Jubilee

It’s been a while since I’ve come across any gingerbread biscuits worth writing about it. Whilst we were away in Devon we went to as Asda which was quite exciting as there are none near us in London. I was buying some snacks for our loong car journey home and found a box of gingerbread bites. The full name was Let’s Celebrate with 14 Gingerbread Bites and the biscuits were in the shape of a union flag – we’ve just finished them off whilst watching the Diamond Jubilee Thames Pageant. We all really enjoyed the biscuits which had a lovely…

Gingerbread house finds – vintage gingerbread cutter

Did you know today was World Baking Day? World Baking Day is all about sharing the joy of baking cakes, and what better way to share the love than #caking! I have been very busy baking but I wanted to share this vintage Nutbrown Party Time Cutter Gingerbread Man. I love the original packaging which proudly says “For use in making super Gingerbread Biscuits, highly popular with young people”. Eek, that makes me feel old! The cutter was made in England by Thos. M. Nutbrown Ltd and the cover shows a freaky gingerbread man with scary eyes, buttons and belt…

    Recipe for lebkuchen

Lebkuchen is a traditional German baked Christmas treat, similar to gingerbread. I’d never tried it before but as the ingredients were so similar to gingerbread I thought I would like it. After a couple of attempts I have perfected my recipe – the spices balance the black treacle perfectly – which makes 20 biscuits. Recipe for lebkuchen   Ingredients: 400g self-raising flour 115g unsalted butter 115g light muscovado sugar 1 egg 400g black treacle 1tsp ground ginger 0.5tsp ground cloves 0.25 tsp chilli powder Method: Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl, beat in the egg and black…

    Treats for your Jubilee party

Have you noticed that there are an increasing amount of special Jubilee limited editions food products? I felt compelled to purchase a few of my favourite brands and must admit I’ve even been keeping the wrappers for the children’s memory boxes! The Jubilee and Olympics are big events in their little lives and even though they are too young to remember, I want them to have some unusual souvenirs to look back on. There are no official branded jubilee products, and products are not allowed to feature pictures of the Queen. So, as well as the commemorative stamps and special…

Day Zero – Month 19 (April)

On the 19 September 2010 I started a Day Zero list: a place to record your goals, discover new challenges, and gain motivation to achieve them. I have a list of 100 things I want to do over 1001 days. The list is due to be competed by 16 June 2013. Life with two children is hard. I knew it would be but it’s really hard and I don’t seem to have much time for much besides looking after children. There are also lots of fun times though and I’m never happier than when we’re all snuggled up in bed…
