Make your own Christmas decorations!

Over the past few evenings I’ve been busy making 12 festive decorations from Cath Kidston’s latest book – Make Your Own Christmas Decorations. Featuring 12 projects the book includes the patterns as well as the felt, thread, pompoms and cord so all you’ll need is a basic sewing kit and some toy stuffing! There are patterns for a Christmas Robin, Father Christmas, Striped Stocking, Gift-Wrapped Present, Christmas Tree, Frosty Snowman, Winter Reindeer, Holly & Berries, Christmas pudding, Snowy Cottage, Festive Stanley and Christmas Angel.

Make your own Christmas decorations!

Each project is well laid out and includes a large colour image of the finished decoration, templates, and step-by-step illustrated instructions so you can’t go wrong!

The decorations are perfect for hanging on a tree, on a garland across a mantle or even on a little tree in the toddler’s room. If we fight over who has them I may just make another set! They’d also make great gift tags and you could make them using lots of different colour combinations.

A couple of tips-

the felt isn’t the best quality so you may want  to buy better quality

there’s only just enough felt so I recommend tracing the templates and cutting them all out, then laying them over the felt so you don’t run out (which I might have done!).

if you divide the cord between 12 each piece is quite short so you may want to substitute with ribbon for longer lengths

felt Cath Kidston decoration  I really enjoyed making these felt Christmas decorations so thought I should offer a copy of her book to any of my readers who might like to have a go themselves. Each decoration is quite simple so is perfect for Cath Kidston fans, those wanting to put their own stamp on their Christmas decorations or a great gift for a younger sewer.

  1. I like ‘I believe in father Christmas’ by Gred Lake. I dont think it was really intended to have been such a hit that it actually was. It reminds me of the 80’s and having the traditional NOW music christmas albums on – with the boxing day party and new years bashes, tinsel and dissapointment I saw from the grown ups who needless to say – werent great at hiding thier issues from us children (Break ups / heartaches / drunken remenising of deceased family members who should be with us celebrating.) – Now dont get me wrong, These are fond memories I hold, really happy times – something id rather not forget. This song brings those emotions back to me, something I remember dearly as the magic of Christmas feels very different now I am all grown up.

  2. Your decorations are very cute, with their own character 🙂 Your tips are also really great. Thanks for sharing. Oh and my favourite song is carol of the Drum. Not sure why or who sang it but I really like it. 🙂

  3. I agree with you. I absolutely love Fairytale of New York. Sadly my OH hates, but as it’s Christmas time he has to be nice and suffer through it 🙂

    @caro_mad

  4. Am impressed you made all 12. Might have to be a bit of a copycat – fairytale of New York is THE best Christmas song

  5. Mine has to be Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas! Me and my husband always have a slow dance round the living room to this song as we are putting up the tree, love it x x

  6. I am already following via Google Reader and email. Thank you for the fab review and giveaway!

  7. I know it’s not a pop song buy ‘All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth’ always reminds me of my Grandad. When I was eight I had two very wobbly front teeth and he always joked that he was going to put string round them and pull them out for me. Then, two weeks before Christmas we were playing in the park with a ball, low and behold I wasn’t very good at catching so he threw the ball, I missed and my two front teeth came clean out! You can guess the rest on Christmas Day….. 😀

  8. My favourite is Silent Night, reminds me of my childhood going to midnight mass.

  9. Hi, sweet crafts, I need to motivate myself now I’ve seen these. My fave Xmas song is definitely Fairytale in New York. Have a nice day.

  10. ‘Deck the Halls With Boughs of Holly’, because you can sing it before the big event (as it is appropriate for putting up the decorations, wrapping presents etc) and I LOVE the ‘fact la la la la’ bit!

  11. Great blog and giveaway! My favourite Christmas song is ‘Step into Christmas’ by Elton John.

It’s the first song I put on when I start decorating on the 1st December every year and it always gets me in the festive spirit.

  12. I love Fairy Tale of New York too. The Pogues mixed with the magnificent Kirsty Maccoll…what could be better?!
Also love the traditional carols too.

  13. I love ‘O Christmas Tree’. I learned it in French when I was a little girl, now I teach it to littles ones.

  14. So many to choose from but my favourite is probably the classic White Christmas by Bing Crosby.

  15. Shakin Stevens ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’

I will admit I sometimes listen to it when it’s not even christmas.
The other day I bopped merrily all the way around the 99p store when it was playing 🙂

  16. frosty the snowman, much to my boys horror, but it always makes me feel festive!

  17. I cant think of any Christmas songs that I don’t like, but one of my favourites is Away in a Manger as I used to sing it to my daughter at bedtime. ( don’t hear it on the radio that much!)

  18. I Love Fairytale of New York too but (and it’s a guilty pleasure because it’s nothing like my usual taste in music) I love David Essex Winter’s Tale. I don’t think it’s specifically a Christmas song but it seems to be the only time of year you hear it!

  19. “Santa Claus is coming to town” – sang live by Bruce Springsteen. When I hear it I know that Christmas has arrived!

  20. I dont know if its a sone but the tune Holidays are coming when the Coca Cola Advert comes on, that means its the countdown to Christmas for me.

  21. Having grown up in the West Midlands it has to be either Slade’s Merrrrrry Christmas or Wizard’s I wish it could be Christmas everyday. I’ve ‘lost’ the accent, but when these start playing I sound like a local!!

  22. Driving Home for Christmas, by Chris Rea, it reminds me of when we used to all pile into the car to go home to see Mum & Dad over the Christmas Holidays. They were such happy times.

  23. Fairytale of New York, when this is played on the radio it’s definitely time to get ready for Christmas!

  24. My favourite all time Christmas song is ‘Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree’. I can’t help but be happy and festive when I hear it!

  25. My favourite is by Low, called Just like Christmas. It’s one that I’m not sick of yet!

  26. ‘I believe in father Christmas’ by Greg Lake. I think the lyrics are so truthful and meaningful, whilst the melody is beautiful and plays in your head. 😉

  27. Santa Claus is coming to town – but the Judds version, I love the country twist on it

  28. Driving Home for Christmas, makes me think of everyone rushing home to be with their loved ones.

  29. Love Fairytale of New York – one of my must-sing songs at karaoke – also love Merry Christmas Darling by the Carpenters, and Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt (am I allowed 3….?) x

  30. It has to be ‘When Santa got stuck up the chimney’ for me……or any song from the muppetts christmas carol!!!! xx

  31. Rudolph the red nose reindeer, have great memories of singing this with my parents on Christmas eve

  32. I love lots of different ones, but a particular favourite is ‘I believe in Father Christmas’ by Greg Lake.

  33. ‘I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claws’, not sure that’s the correct title but that’s the song I love.

  34. my favourite is The Little Drummer Boy, great school days, great school days memories 🙂

  35. I love The Twelve Days of Christmas because my children really like this song and sing it all the time (not just in December!)

  36. Like many others here, I’m going with Fairy Tale of New York. Every year, the first time I hear it on the radio is the time I really know Christmas is on its way. 🙂

Bit of trivia for you: did you know Shane MacGowan’s birthday is Christmas Day?

  37. I love Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer! Also my daughter was born just before Christmas 2010 and was in the special care baby unit over Christmas – I sang loads of Christmas songs to her then and now they all make me cry – if I hear a Sally Army band I’m really in trouble. I love them all!

  38. Fairytale of New York by The Pogues is an absolute classic and is The Best Christmas song….ever x

  39. ‘and the bells were ringing out for Christmas Day’ Fairy Tale of New York is the greatest christmas song every written.

  40. ‘Away in a manger’- a couple of years ago a friend of mine made a Christmas CD for all her close friends with her daughters singing a few Christmas songs and the eldest daughter did a solo of ‘Away in a manger’. They are a lovely family and very musical. It was a lovely gift and almost brought a tear to my eye! 🙂

  41. fairytale in new york 🙂 though I love most christmas songs (nd films! currently have 7 on the sky box waiting to be watched ;))

  42. If I had to pick one favourite, it would be Sarah McLachlan’s version of I’ll Be Home For Christmas. Her voice is incredible – what she does on this song is beyond extraordinary.

  43. Silly I know but I love the ‘holidays are coming’ song off the coca cola ads, I know christmas is coming as soon as i hear it 😀 (and find my self muttering it all day!)

  44. It’s gotta be “Step In To Christmas” by Elton John. Ohhh nooo it’s getting in my head already!!!

  45. Oh – Fairy Tale of New York – love that song too, but probably my favourite is Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses.

  46. White Christmas by Bing Crosby. He looked rather like my late dad and he reminds me of him every time I hear Bing sing. Like to feel that my dad is still close to me.

  47. I love ‘Fairytale in New York’ too, there is no other song that makes me feel as xmassy!

  48. Mine is also Fairytale of New york , every year I show my kids my irish dancing moves although they do get better with a little mulled wine lol :O)
