Things to do in London during the Olympics

I’m not planning on staying at home during the Olympics. School’s out for the summer and my toddler will want our normal adventures in London.

countdown clockWithout a doubt our adventures will have an Olympic theme. We’ve already seen the Olympic rings at St Pancras and on Saturday we saw the Olympic clock in Trafalgar Square. We’ve also checked out Olympic decorations in other parts of town to make sure the ones in our borough are meant to look quite so lacklustre.

We’ve scored some free tickets to see what the Dutch are doing as they take over Ally Pally, temporarily re-named Heineken House.

We’ve already seen London and the Olympics at the Museum of London (until September) and the display of posters about sporting events in London at the London Transport Museum. Interestingly, the display featured the only poster produced by London Underground for the 1948 Olympic Games in London, although they did decorate some stations with flags! Today we visited the British Museum to see The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games medals which was very small but worth a look.

There are a couple of exhibitions I’d love to see – Mascots of the Olympic Games at the V&A Museum of Childhood (on until 28th October) and Collecting the Olympic Games exhibition at the British Library (until 9th September).

And finally we’ll be having our own garden Olympics and doing some extra scooting about to make sure we are empathising with those Olympians.

What about you? Does the Olympic hype make you want to join in or run away?
