I was recently asked if I would like to try Baobab, it’s the latest super-fruit that is grown in South Africa and is harvested and turned into a nutrient rich powder by the Eden Project in Cornwall. They sell it as a smoothie in their Rainforest Biome, and it is now available to buy in sachet form through their online shop.
Gram for gram, baobab fruit has six times more vitamin C than an orange and more calcium than a glass of milk. Baobab also benefits from having three times more iron than red meat, six times as much potassium than in bananas and more than three times as much antioxidants than blueberries! It almost sounds too good to be true so I was happy to try it out for myself.
I was sent enough samples for a week, and found that it was really easy to get a daily nutritional boost with one simple addition to your diet.
Baobab fruit powder has a tangy flavour suited to both savoury and sweet dishes and it couldn’t be easier to add it to your diet. Some serving ideas include:
- Stir a teaspoon into a smoothie or fruit juice and taste the difference
- Zap up your breakfast cereal or oats porridge by adding a prickle
- Blend into your low fat yoghurt to add an exotic twist. Serve with chopped fruit
- Like homemade bread or jam? Mix some baobab powder in and boost the nutritional value of every slice of toast
- Create healthy treats by adding it into your pancakes or homemade breakfast bars
Baobab products can be purchased online at from the Eden Project shop as well as Holland & Barrett, Planet Organic and all good health food shops.
I have been offered one annual pass to the Eden Project for a lucky reader of the gingerbread house. The winner will able to see the baobab tree (and all the other wonderful things the Eden Project has to offer!) for themselves. As my husband and I have been enjoying some delicious luxury ice cream the children have been enjoying their own fruity treats. Crosse & Blackwell 4Kids has teamed up with Disney to launch a yummy range of fruit pieces in jelly just for kids.
The new pots are available in six flavours and count as one of your child’s five a day. They make a great snack but are also perfect for lunch boxes too. Each pot features a character from the Toy Story films and includes a handy little spoon so they are great when out and about. They contain real fruit juice, instead of added sugar or artificial sweeteners, with no artificial colours or preservatives.
My children are huge fans of Toy Story so the fruit pots were instantly appealing to them. They enjoyed choosing which pot they were going to have, based purely on the character on the front! They didn’t leave a mouthful so I assume they found them very tasty!
Apparently today was the last day of summer. We found it pretty hot but had something delicious to help cool us down, the new Clotted Cream & Raspberry Ice Cream from Kelly’s of Cornwall.
Kelly’s of Cornwall ice cream is the only genuine Cornish ice cream that is made in Cornwall and available nationwide. Made with the finest dairy ingredients, including lashings of Cornish whole milk and Cornish Clotted cream from dairy cows grazing on Cornwall’s lush green pastures.
We try to buy Kelly’s of Cornwall as we all love it (and have reviewed it here before). It’s pretty good stuck on top of a wafer cone, the children definitely thought so, but I wanted to try serving it a different way for dessert. I used shop-bought meringues, fresh raspberries and a tub of Clotted Cream & Raspberry Ice Cream, a blend of Cornish cream rippled with rich raspberry sauce.
I crushed the meringue before adding a handful of raspberries and two scoops of ice-cream. It was so tasty, combining my favourite ingredients, and looked quite good too. It’s a great addition to the existing range of flavours and will be perfect to accompany some yummy warm autumnal puddings!
New Kelly’s of Cornwall Raspberry Ice Cream is available from selected supermarket stores nationwide, RRP £3.99 for a 1-litre tub.
