Vintage sewing table makeover

I had no idea what to call this post. Over the Bank Holiday weekend I finally had some time to update a vintage wooden sewing table I bought earlier this year. I found it in a charity shop, complete with dodgy 1970’s orange nylon quilted lining. I ripped out the cushioned lining and it’s been waiting for attention ever since.

I’ve been updating my daughter’s bedroom. She said she no longer wanted her dolls so we’ve cleared out all the beautiful dolls beds I’ve picked up and re-painted, her dolls, dolls clothes and feeding chairs, baths and prams. It was a pretty major clear out which made me feel sad as she’s only 3! Anyway, her room is a lot less cluttered and we’ve already added a sweet little Miffy stool I hand painted.

Equipment used:
Vintage wooden sewing table
Varnish
Paint brushes
PVA glue
Party Decoupage Paper from Belle and Boo
Swann Morton scalpel

I lightly sanded the wooden sewing table, it had a pull up lid and deep draw, perfect for storing craft supplies. I gave it a coat of varnish and left it to dry.

Then I applied strips from some sweet Belle and Boo decoupage paper called Party. It features lines of children with a really nostalgic feel. I cut into into thin strips using my trusty Swann Morton scalpel.

I applied it around the wooden sewing table with PVA glue. I wiped away any excess glue and squeezed out any bumps with my fingers.

When it had fully dried I gave the whole thing another coat of varnish. It makes a great little desk for my 3 year old. Her room is lovely and light and gives her some space for her drawing. She can store her colouring books and pencils inside the desk when they’re not in use. It’s looks lovely in her bedroom and has definitely given it a ‘big girl’ edge.

I had lots of the Belle and Boo decoupage paper left over so added a couple of strips of the decoupage paper to her little chair and made her a pen pot too. Now she’s all ready for some serious crafting.
