book review

What we’re reading

My children are very keen little bookworms and have recently received some lovely new books to read and review.

summer reading

Stop Sticking, Stan! by Nicola Killen

Meet Stan. His favourite, favourite thing to do is COLLECT things. He has a collection of buttons, a collection of odd socks, a collection of string and a collection of coat hangers. One day, his mum gives him a reward for tidying his bedroom and he begins a whole new collection – STICKERS!

Stan sticks his stickers everywhere and soon things are getting a little out of hand … can anything persuade Stan to stop ticking?

Zoe and Beans Pirate Treasure! by Chloe and Mick Inkpen

Ahoy me hearties! The sun is out and summer is here, so Zoe, Beans and best friend Oscar are off on a trip to the seaside. They’ve got buckets and spades and they’re ready to search for buried pirate treasure! But digging is hard work and treasure is hard to find! It looks like it’s up to clever  Beans to sniff some out …

Betsey Makes a Splash! by Helen Stephens

This is the first in a new series of fun and reassuring stories about first experiences. In this book Betsey and her mummy visit the swimming pool. Betsey likes carrying her big rolled up towel just like mummy, but she isn’t sure about jumping into the pool. Will her big-girl friends Poppy and Holly help her see that swimming is fun?

Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes by James Dean and Eric Litwin

Pete the Cat loves his brand-new white shoes so much he goes walking down the street singing. Along the way, Pete’s white shoes don’t stay so white. But does that worry Pete? Goodness, no!

There’s a free song you can sing along to, videos and worksheets on the dedicated website (www.harpercollins.co.uk/Petethecat) it’s guaranteed to keep you and your little ones feeling good.

My 2 and 4 year old enjoyed all of these books. I’m fortunate that they love to receive new books and want to read them again and again (and again!) until they know the words better than I do. Little Sis adores Zoe and Beans so we’ve been thinking of some related craft activities she can do.

Big Brother loves Stop Sticking, Stan! He too loves stickers and always has at least one Panini sticker album on the go. I like the fact the story touches on rewards as we’ve always found he responds well to reward charts. It’s a sweet book with lovely illustrations and a page of stickers too.
