How to dye pasta

How to dye pasta for kids to play with

The past couple of days we’ve had a lot of rain so we’ve been trying lots of crafts to keep us busy. Today we thought we would show you how to dye some pasta shapes as we’ve been having lots of fun with dried pasta, it’s surprisingly quick and easy too.

To dye your own pasta you will need:
pasta shapes
white wine vinegar
food colouring
cocktail sticks
plastic bags
tray

How to dye pasta

Measure 1 teaspoon of white wine vinegar into a small bowl. Add a generous amount of food colouring and mix with a cocktail stick.

Place the dry pasta into a clear plastic bag and add the coloured vinegar mixture. Shake the bag for a couple of minutes until all the pasta is completely covered.

Pour out the coloured pasta onto a tray, I used disposable foil baking trays, and leave to dry thoroughly for an hour.

Then you are ready to craft and have some fun!

We only had a couple of different types of pasta but my children enjoyed wrapping the farfalle with string to make long necklaces. They threaded the penne with pipe cleaners to make bracelets. Threading is great for improving fine motor skills and I really enjoyed watching my 30 month old who quickly mastered both threading and bending the ends of the pipe cleaner to make her own bracelets.

I hope you like the results and let me know if you try it yourself!

Think you can use alcohol too but vinegar sounded more kid friendly!

I died some rice recently (but without vinegar), does the dye dry ok in the middle of the penne?

I love this idea! I adore pasta jewelry and picture frames. A pasta necklace and a wry smile is more certainly the mark of a contented mummy 🙂
