Sainsbury’s gingerbread sauce

Just before Christmas I came across another seasonal product from Sainbury’s – gingerbread flavour sauce. The picture on the front looked delicious so I foolishly added it to my basket. Of course I then needed something to eat with it so bought some treacle sponge pudding too.

I was really looking forward to trying the sauce so waited until my dinner had gone down before heating the sauce and pouring it over the pudding.

Hmmm.

I have to admit that although it smelt good (just like gingerbread!) it didn’t taste as I expected and wasn’t that nice! In fact it left my teeth feeling horrible which is always a bad sign with food.

According to the instructions the sauce can be eaten hot or cold (can’t imagine eating it cold!). The ingredients include tapioca starch, cornflour, sugar, caramelised sugar syrup and flavouring. I’m hoping the ‘flavouring’ included some kind of ginger otherwise I’m not sure how they attempted to recreate the ‘gingerbread flavour’. Just like the Sainsbury’s gingerbread biscuits I tried a few weeks ago, I couldn’t find any information about this product on Sainsbury’s own website. I won’t be trying it again and may well stay clear of any Sainsbury’s seasonal gingerbread products this Christmas!
