Product review: How To Sew e books I

I was recently given the opportunity to review four ebooks on a variety of sewing topics: How to Sew – Basics, How to Sew – Applique, How to Sew – Patchwork and How to Sew – Machine Sewing. Today I will be reviewing the first two ebooks.

I’m a complete novice at sewing but I really enjoy having something creative to do after putting my little boy to bed. I was encouraged by my grandmother and mother who could both knit, crochet, sew and embroider anything.

How to Sew – Basics

The How to Sew – Basics is a handy ebook of 21 pages covering the basics of sewing, including fabrics, sewing threads, embellishments, what you need in your basic sewing kit and covers a couple of patchwork, quilting, inserting zips and bias binding. Each section is clearly laid out with lots of illustrations and helpful tips have been included.

This is a useful ebook for complete beginners and a good reference tool for basic techniques.

How to Sew – Applique

The How to Sew – Applique ebook contains handy information about applique, the technique of applying one fabric to a background fabric to create surface decoration. I found this ebook very useful (you may remember I have previously struggled with applique!).  Topics covered include using Bondaweb/Wonderweb, hand stitching and machine applique, and make do and mend. The ebook is 26 pages and also contains 6 pages of templates for two projects – bunting and a washbag.

This ebook is recommended for any beginner who wants a simple guide to applique. This technique has a number of uses, from fixing holes in your clothes, to embellishing cushions or children’s clothes and this is a great introduction to the subject.

Both ebooks are published by David and Charles and are available through RUCraft. I will be reviewing two more ebooks later.
