We’ve had a busy weekend and therefore no time for crafting unfortunately 🙁 The weekend started with a big meal out with a bunch of friends at The Larder Restaurant on Friday night. The food wasn’t great but it was fun to be out and try somewhere new. We started, and ended, the evening with drinks in The Crown Tavern, Clerkenwell Green.
Today we went south to West Norwood Cemetery. We’re on a mission to visit the Magnificent Seven this year. We’ve already been to Highgate Cemetery and Abney Park Cemetery. That just leaves Kensal Green, Nunhead Cemetery, Brompton Cemetery and Tower Hamlets Cemetery.
There’s a great deal on information about the cemetery and famous inhabitants here. The only grave I really wanted to find was that of Mrs Beeton, since reading The Short Life and Long Times of Mrs Beeton last year. Like everyone else, I thought Mrs Beeton was a middle aged cook, but found she stole all of her recipes from published cookery books.
Her grave was very hard to find and we almost gave up – thank goodness for my iphone! The grave that is there is not the original one and the inscription is very worn. A small plaque has been put on the grave, presumably to help identify it! The grave lies across the path from the memorial garden, just above Ship Path.
The cemetery was full of wildlife which presumably has the run of the place most of the time. We kept coming across a beautiful red fox who was happily running over the gravestones, accompanied by a smaller brown fox.
We finished off our day out with a drive up to Crystal Palace and a look round the indoor market at Haynes Lane. Bliss!
