World Book Day inspired cupcakes

We have been excitedly talking about World Book Day for a good few weeks now As a family of bookworms we just love to read and World Book Day means everyone can celebrate the joy of reading. Thanks to home learning the whole family are getting involved in World Book Day this year. We are looking forward to taking part in an online assembly with David Walliams as well as a virtual meet with Tom Fletcher and Rob Biddulph through the World Book Day website on Thursday.

World Book Day activities

My children’s school challenged them to make book nooks which they have been working on over the last few days. They were also sent a whole list of activities they could try each day, ranging from baking World Book Day inspired cupcakes to making their own comic strip, making a potato character or writing a letter to their favourite character. Everything seems much more creative this year which is right up our street!

Varjak Paw by SF Said

Varjak Paw the Mesopotamian catMy youngest has been reading Varjak Paw with her Year 4 class. Have you heard of the book before? My son also read it when he was in Year 4 and has happy memories of reading it.

Varjak Paw is a Mesopotamian Blue kitten. He lives high up in an old house on a hill. He’s never left home, but then his grandfather tells him about the Way – a secret martial art for cats. Now Varjak must use the Way to survive in a city full of dangerous dogs, cat gangs and, strangest of all the mysterious Vanishings.

It’s a great book by British writer SF Said full of mystery and adventure. I love discovering new books thanks to my children!

World Book Day cupcakes

We decided to make some World Book Day cupcakes inspired by Varjak Paw. He’s a Mesopotamian Blue kitten with silver/blue fur. We didn’t have a cat cookie cutter but luckily we were able to print one on our 3D printer. You can easily make your own card template if you don’t have a cookie cutter.

We whipped up a yummy batch of vanilla cupcakes and left them to cool. My youngest wanted a vanilla butter cream too, so we made some of that and piped it on each cupcake.

Then we made the Varjak Paw inspired toppers from black icing and placed one on the top of each cupcake. My youngest added edible eyes to each one, I think she just wanted as much sugar as she could get!

Varjak Paw cupcakes

I love our Varjak Paw inspired cupcakes. We had fun making them and it was a great way to talk more about the book. My daughter has been given a lot of English lessons based on different chapters and events so it was lovely to step away from the books and bring Varjak Paw to life in the kitchen.

These cupcakes make the purrrrr-fect treat to help celebrate World Book Day.

Don’t forget to take a look at some of our other World Book Day posts.
