Welcome to our fourth annual Chinese New Year blog hop! Lunar New Year, more commonly known as Chinese New Year, starts on February 16th. It is the beginning of the Year of the Dog, and we have lots of great ideas for celebrating it with kids! Don’t miss our series from last year, 2016 and 2015, and you can find even more on our Chinese New Year Pinterest board.

Materials used:
Small polystyrene ball
Red tissue paper
PVA glue
Yellow pipe cleaner

How to make a Chinese New Year lantern

First thread your pipe cleaner through the middle of your polystyrene ball. I used a metal skewer first as the pipe cleaner bent easily. I made a loop at the top of the polystyrene ball so the Chinese New Year lantern could be hung when finished.

I let my children snip the red tissue paper into small squares. They covered their polystyrene balls in PVA glue and the squares of red tissue paper. They got quite sticky but this was all part of the fun!

We left their lanterns to one side for about an hour whilst the glue dried.

To finish them off I snipped the end of the pip cleaner and pushed it into the bottom of the polystyrene ball to look like a tassle.

Then they were ready to be hung up.
