Celebrating Roald Dahl Day

roald-dahl-100-logo

My blog seems to be receiving lots of visits from people searching for Roald Dahl crafts lately which is great as we are big fans of Roald Dahl and the characters he created. This year is a very special year for Roald Dahl fans as we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth.

As we will soon be celebrating Roald Dahl Day I thought I would bring together some of my most popular Roald Dahl posts in one place.

Roald Dahl Day

September is Roald Dahl’s birth month, and each year it is celebrated with wonderful events centred around his birthday on 13th September. This year will be the biggest worldwide celebration of Roald Dahl Day ever! You can find out more and download a Roald Dahl Day party pack so you join in the celebrations at home, school or a youth group.

The BFG by Steven Spielberg

The BFG by Steven Spielberg film poster

Last week we finally managed to go and see The BFG at the cinema:

Ten-year-old Sophie is in for the adventure of a lifetime when she meets the Big Friendly Giant (played by Mark Rylance). Naturally scared at first, the young girl soon realizes that the 24-foot behemoth is actually quite gentle and charming. As their friendship grows, Sophie’s presence attracts the unwanted attention of Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater and other giants. After travelling to London, Sophie and the BFG must convince Queen Victoria to help them get rid of all the bad giants once and for all.

We loved this film, especially feisty Sophie. There were some slight additions to the original story but I felt they really added to the story. I can’t wait for it to come out on DVD so we can watch it again.

Roald Dahl crafts for kids

Roald Dahl has inspired us to have so much fun with our crafts. We’ve made The BFG’s Frobscottle drink and eaten his Grobswitchy Cake – both of which were actually delicious. We’ve made super big BFG ears and got stuck into the latest Roald Dahl book – The Gloriumptious Worlds of Roald Dahl.

The BFG Dream Jar Trail

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know we’ve had fun looking for the special Dream Jar sculpture trail over the summer holidays. Each of the 50 jars contained “splendiferous” sculptures based on dream stories from well known celebrities and personalities. The trail ended last week and most of the Dream Jars were auctioned to raise money for Save the Children with a selection also being sold to help the work of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.

Summer Reading Challenge 2016

Every year my children take part in the Summer Reading Challenge through our local library. This year the theme was The Big Friendly Read. You can probably guess from the title that this was also part of the year-long celebrations marking 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl – the world’s number one storyteller.

My children were already familiar with the characters which popped up on their Summer Reading Challenge book and the cards they received on each visit. We were also able to make some of the special events which took place at our local library. They loved the special certificates they received at the end of the Challenge too!

I can’t think of anything better than getting lost in a Roald Dahl story. Do you have a favourite?
