baking eating holidays

Eating Belgian waffles

It’s a little known fact that I’m a Belgophile. I adore Belgium and have visited many Belgium cities including Brussels, Ghent, Ypres, Ostend, Bruges and this month Antwerp. I have a long list of more Belgian cities I want to visit, much to my family’s dismay.

Obviously travelling at home and abroad can be expensive. According to some recent research by the Santander 123 credit card team the average daily spend while ON holiday (excluding flights and accommodation) in Barbados is a massive £109! Belgium is £88 and Poland and India came out cheapest with an average daily spend of £30.

Santander want to promote the benefits of using a credit card to spread the cost of a holiday. One of the benefits is  purchases between £100 and £30,000 are protected by law should anything go wrong with your airline or hotel company.

To celebrate our recent trip we thought we would re-visit our happy memories and have a little staycation at home by enjoying some Belgium food. First of all we enjoyed delicious Steak frites with some bottles of Belgian beer.

Our dessert was warm waffles sprinkled with powdered sugar and syrup, all brought back from Antwerp. Yep, I make my family visit supermarkets whilst we’re abroad so I can bring back my favourite foods to enjoy at home.

As the children were still hungry they ate a few Antwerps Handje too. The hand-shaped biscuits are an Antwerp speciality and refer to the legend of Antigoon, the giant who terrorised the skippers on the river Scheldt.

Non-payment of the fare resulted in having your hands chopped off which I think was a little extreme. This carried on until a Roman centurion called Brabo killed the giant, chopped off his hand and threw it into the River Scheldt! Anyway, the biscuits are crumbly and delicious and a lovely way to remember my favourite place to visit.

I’ve never been to Antwerp but Bruges is one of my favourite places.
