Rainbow layer cake

Today the toddler turned 3. We just gave him a couple of presents to open before nursery, unfortunately one of them was a Buzz Lightyear which went off before it was opened, rather giving the game away! He was totally spoilt with some Disney Cars for his collection, a train for his train set, and a wooden bike. His name was read out on cBeebies and he was only a little bemused by the home made Lightning McQueen pinata.

We made a special rainbow layer cake which was fun to make, if a little time consuming. Fortunately the weather was terrible over the weekend so we were able to stay in and bake six layers of cake in red, orange, yellow, green, light and dark blue. When it had cooled down we sliced it to size and assembled it with buttercream.

The toddler loved it, thank goodness!

I like the way the rainbow layer cakes look – but is it even a little bit healthy or tasty? When I see coloured food I am instantly thinking to myself “this looks harmful!”. And too bad, as my kids love weird-coloured food, of course, I think every kid does…

I’m not sure that any cake is healthy but it tasted nice as I added vanilla essence to it!

What a fantastic tower of a cake. I made rainbow cake by pouring the various coloured mixes on top of each other but never made them in layers. This looks amazing!

Thanks! It was loads of fun to make but I think we’ll be eating it all week 🙂

Beautiful, this seems to be a very toddler friendly cake – I made it for my son’s second birthday, and I know of loads of other bloggers who have also made it for their little ones.

Your colours turned out far far better than mine did, though. Mine was a pastel rainbow.
