baby book review Cath Kidston parenting

How to introduce a second baby to your first?

Just how do you introduce the idea of a sibling to your only child? I’ve been thinking about this for a while and got some great book recommendations from my local independent bookshop. We’ve been reading the beautifully illustrated ” target=”_blank”>There’s Going To Be A Baby:

We’ve also been reading ” target=”_blank”>Waiting for Baby:

Over the last few weeks Edward has been pointing at pictures of babies in my parenting magazines as well as when we’re out and about. He’s also started touching my belly and lifting up my top to have a closer look and a poke – I guess the bump is difficult to miss at 36 weeks!

In case Edward comes to visit us in hospital he has a present from the new baby, a lovely Cath Kidston colouring book and crayons. I also couldn’t resist an adorable ‘big brother’ tshirt.

We’ve been talking to him about the new baby for a while so I’m hoping he’ll take it in his stride. He’s a sociable little chap and I think he’s going to love his new role as a big brother. Fortunately he’s only 19 months so hopefully too young to remember a time before his sibling arrived and  too young to be jealous or resentful. I’m also hoping that my husband will spend lots of time with him whilst he’s on his paternity leave as he’s a real daddy’s boy which Edward will love more than a new sibling!

I told my eldest son that there was a baby in my tummy and let him feel the baby move but I don’t think he really understood, he was just 3 and a half. My mum and dad were looking after him when I went in and had the baby and when they brought him back home, he saw the baby (Oliver) and cried and then he wouldn’t go near him or even walk past him! But within a few days all that changed and he became protective of him and used to help me out by passing me nappies and pressing the music button on Oliver’s swing etc. That was almost two years ago and they love each other to bits now, with the occassional arguement thrown in!!
