A lazy day

This cold weather means I want to be eating good wholesome food! Ok, so I’ve already written about butterfly cakes today but I don’t just eat cake (honest). Most of the time I like to cook our meals from scratch but, like most busy mums, I keep stock of quick and easy meals for my lazy days when I don’t want to spend time cooking.

perfect fajitaToday I was waiting for my husband to come home from work to decide what he wanted to eat for dinner. For various reasons it took him over 2 hours (instead of the usual 40 minutes) so when he did get home I needed something quick. I grabbed The Perfect Fajita Kit Mexican BBQ which contained Plain Flour Tortillas, a sachet of mild Mexican BBQ Seasoning and Soured Cream. I already had chicken, and just added an onion and some peppers and everything was ready in 15 minutes. Simples!

We love fajitas so this kit is a great idea. I found the idea of soured cream in a sachet quite strange but it tasted fine and was a really filling meal. We’ve also been sent The Perfect Fajita Kit Crispy Crumb which I can’t wait to try, I’m just hoping it doesn’t take my husband getting stuck in traffic before we do.

My messy eater

My little 14 month old is a messy eater. She has the appetite of a sparrow and what she doesn’t eat, she gets everywhere. This morning it was porridge rubbed in her hair and I can’t even write about the things that fall out of her nappy everytime I change her.

She was sent some OXO tot products from their feeding range, and whilst they didn’t stop the mess, they did make mealtimes more fun for her.

We tried the OXO tot divided plate, feeding spoon and sippy cut with handles. She took to all the items straight away!

The divided plate is brilliant for mealtimes as there are 3 sections which is great for portion control, and we especially love the little centre tray for sauces! The only problem we had was with the outer ring. It’s removeable (which means it can be removed when your child has mastered feeding themselves) but we found it too loose.

The feeding spoons are a great size for little hands. Made from soft silicon, this means they are soft on her poor gums and as they are quite shallow, they can’t be overloaded with food. The cup was a big hit too. The chunky handles are easy to grip and the dimple in the lid means plenty of room for little noses!

OXO tot make lots of products that make everyday living easier – we certainly think so!

Are my children normal?

Now I’m the proud mother of two children it seems strange looking back to the time I wasn’t pregnant or a parent. I don’t think I used to be quite so addicted to my laptop(!) but I remember when I still worked and was pregnant a colleague recommended some websites to look at. These included the Bounty pregnancy tracker and sites to meet other pregnant women. I quickly signed myself up to receive emails and became inundated with information. It’s so each to feel overwhelmed and it took a while to find out what I really needed.

I wish there was something similar for 12 months plus! I always understood the pregnancy and baby bit but toddlers are a different world. I love that my children need me but they really should come with a manual. The things I am currently finding difficult are:

Eating

Sleeping

Where shall I start?

The 12 month old just doesn’t want to eat. We’ve started giving her a bowl and spoon and letting her feed herself. She seems to eat more than usual which is fantastic but oh my goodness – the mess. My washing basket is already over flowing so I might have to invest in some long sleeved bibs and plastic sheeting.

The other problem is sleeping. She will only go to sleep when she’s cuddled to sleep and her brother has developed a fear of his own room. I’m glad I have someone to share the bedtime routine as my husband takes the toddler and I take the 12 month old. They used to go to bed so easily and now it’s turned into a real nightmare.

I’m not sure why the toddler seems to have an irrational fear of his room. It’s not so long ago since we tried to make his room nicer, he already has a night light and we have to leave the main light on for him. The past couple of nights we’ve also had to leave his door ajar. It’s not pleasant seeing him so upset, especially when he’s so tired, so hopefully it’s just another phase he’s going through.

This is why I need to find developmental emails about toddlers. Someone sign me up – please!
