Film review: Bugs Bunny’s Easter Funnies

Posted on April 28, 2012July 28, 2016 by jenny

The latest film we were offered as part of the Tots100 Film Club was Bugs Bunny’s Easter Funnies. It arrived a week or two after Easter but the weather has been perfect for snuggling up on the sofa and watching dvds.

Easter FunniesI loved Bugs Bunny when I was a child so I was really hoping the children would love my old favourite too. Bugs Bunny’s Easter Funnies follows the adventures of Bugs Bunny who takes over from the Easter Bunny who is poorly. It features all his adversaries in the shape of Sylvester, Pepe Le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn and Daffy Duck. The film is 42 minutes long so the perfect length for my toddler with his short attention span!

Now, I don’t hide the fact that the toddler lives and breathes Thomas the Tank Engine so I was a tiny bit wary about trying to get him to watch a different DVD. For the first 10 minutes he kept pointing at his shelf of DVDs asking for Thomas but eventually he settled down on my lap to watch it. To be honest the DVD is a bit strange as there is an overriding story but the film is actually made up of long-ish clips of previous Bugs Bunny cartoons, not what I expected. Because the DVD moves between the different cartoons I found it difficult to follow but this wasn’t a problem for the toddler. He laughed out loud at the antics of Sylvester and Tweety Pie, his favourite episode definitely being the one in the circus. There also didn’t seem to be much of a connection to Easter so the title is a little misleading.

The other problem I had was with the quality. We’re so used to watching HD tv and seeing excellent quality films at the cinema that it was a bit of a shock to watch these very old cartoons in all their grainy old glory.

The dvd has a couple of special features which include a bonus cartoon (His Hare-Raising Tale) and 3 interactive Looney Tunes Puzzle Games. The DVD is great for a bit of nostalgia, and it taught my toddler the word bunny, even if he does pronounce it ‘bummy’.  I think we will be watching it again as ever since we watched it he now points to his shelf of films and shouts ‘bummy’. Well, it makes a happy change from those Thomas ones!
